Welcome to the USS Faraday!

With the discovery of a stable wormhole in the Volzuc system, the Federation has negotiated an agreement for passage into the Gamma Quadrant. Late to the game, it became clear during discussions that the peace-loving Volzuc have made access available to anyone and everyone. With the best minds in the Federation predicting a devastating loss of Romulan life within the next few years, efforts are being made to find suitable worlds for resettlement. The planet Vashti in the Beta Quadrant is one such world but there are those who believe the Gamma Quadrant would provide a better alternative.

The Volzuc, who never leave their home world, operate in space through the use of synthetic life forms. To facilitate their own explorations, a small station, manned solely by their synthetic counterparts, has been established on other side of the wormhole. The Volzuc prove adamant on one point -- ships can go through but not fleets. No overwhelming displays of force will be permitted. So, interviews are held and after lengthy discussion, the USS Faraday, a Luna Class science and exploration vessel, is chosen to make the trip.

Welcome to 2384. Its time to return to the Gamma Quadrant.

Hi, all.

First, please welcome Lieutenant Jael Orwin, our new Assistant Chief of Security, who will also function as our Security Investigations Officer. Lieutenant Orwin will be reporting to Lieutenant T'Rin.

MIssion Related

Today starts our first mission, "Parrots are Talking". Really, its going to be "Parrots are Talking (Part 1)" because there is no way that I can find to put a mission on hold and then reactivate it later. And all of that will become clearer as we go forward, I promise.

For now, what's important to know is that we have arrived at Starbase 720, also known as Starbase Gamma. This is a Buckingham Class station that is still under construction. Not all of the systems are operational and there's abundant evidence of people unpacking and setting things up. You'll also notice avatars (humanoid in appearance but adorned with complicated, color patterns on the left side of the head (equivalent to the beadwork worn by the Volzuc to identify themselves, their position, and familial associations). These avatars are drones that are operated from a distance by actual Volzuc who live on Volzuc 2. There are some shops open already and a couple of decent restaurants:

- The Squeaky Wheel: specializing in vegan cuisines from a number of worlds including Vulcan
- Gamma Ray's: Owned by a guy named Ray naturally, it serves a variety of entrees that would be considered home-cooking, with a gourmet twist, on the world it originated from. Ray likes challenges so he's always up for creating something on demand. If you can describe it, Ray can make it -- or so he says.

Getting Started on the Mission

Apologies for being so slow. I've been really sick this week and not quite better but I'm getting there. You all will have twenty-four hours of shore leave, to do with as you will, while Jael and Charlotte report aboard. Ooh. Forgot to tell you about Charlotte -- she's an investigative journalist with the Federation News Service. She'll be traveling with us but will go off on her own now and again. Will probably spend some time with the Volzuc at some point. She's my PNPC and I'd be delighted to write with anyone who's interested.

That's about all I can think of for now. My one functioning brain cell is getting tired, so I'll sign off for now.

» Seven, then Six and Now Seven Again

Posted on Tue Oct 19th, 2021 @ 1:36am by Captain Grayson Ba'Chu in Sim Announcement

So ... we lost our Science Officer (and good news by the way - his wife had a baby girl!) which brought us down to six. Since then, we have gained a Chief for Flight Control, Lieutenant Rohan Sutulhar. Welcome, Conchy (that's his Discord name)! Lieutenant Sutulhar is reporting aboard as is a new Chief Medical Officer (same writer, different character). There will be a post or two coming out that explains what happened of course but in-character, feel free to ask questions and all that.

So, in-character, the change in personnel is delaying our departure. From an out-of-character perspective, we'll start writing the departure anyways since bigger posts tend to take longer to write.

Site Changes

You'll notice that new specifications and manifest have been added to the site. You did notice, right? More on Starbase 720 at the upcoming meeting and while I'm thinking about that -- after that dreadful attempt at a celebratory, working breakfast (and yes, I'm looking at you Tivan :-) ), Grayson isn't going to be receptive to anything festive for a bit though there will be a meeting of the department heads.

Our current CMO is going to be stationed at the Starbase as will Lieutenant McCauley's husband. They'll both appear on the second manifest as will by NPC Admiral, W. Cantrell Fitzhugh. If you want to add NPCs of your own, let me know and hey, if there's interest, we might even run a minor mission or two on the starbase to involve these NPCs (and by interest, I mean, talk to me in DM so that I know there actually is some interest).

Also, as I said before, the wiki for the site is broken. Information that you would know is available through Discord in the #database channel. At the moment, there are documents on Deltans, Gamma Quadrant species, and the Corvan. The Faraday is considered canon + which means that there will be differences between what you've seen in movies and television shows or read in books and what we consider ship canon.

Openings

Our urgent need at the moment is a Chief Science Officer. Other than that, we've got coverage by NPCs or Player-Characters for most of the departments.

New MIssion

Our upcoming mission, "The Price is Right", will give you an introduction to both the Gamma Quadrant and to some of the major players in the area. So you know, I tend to drop bread crumbs which means that someone you see in one mission, in a minor role, could very well come back in a major role somewhere down the line. Same with bits of information we learn during a mission. Maybe not immediately relevant but that doesn't mean it won't be in the near future.

Anyways, that catches you up on what's happening. Any questions? Send me a DM. If I'm not immediately available, I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

» We Are Seven

Posted on Sun Sep 19th, 2021 @ 1:15am by Captain Grayson Ba'Chu in Sim Announcement

Hey, Faraday crew!

We have reached seven writers with the introduction of Ensign Ryan Peck, our new Assistant Chief Science Officer (PsioniCM on Discord).

As I've said before, so you're probably repeating it with me at this point, the Faraday is currently at Utopia Planitia readying for departure. Time to say good-bye to those you're leaving behind, make sure you have everything you need, both personally and for your department, and get your certifications in order. We'll be getting underway as soon as the reporting in JPs are finished.

Oh, and if you know someone who's looking for a sim, we're looking for:

Chief SIGNIT
Chief Logistics and Supply
Chief Diplomatic Officer
Chief Flight Control Officer
Chief Counselor
Chief Ship Services

Until we find Chiefs for these positions, I'm asking for volunteers to write lower-ranked NPCs in one or more of these departments. Those who have already volunteered are listed beside their choices. And that's not to say you can't put someone in a department that's already got a Chief. Security, for example, can always use an extra red shirt ... did I say that out loud? Yellow, I meant, yellow shirt.

SHEP - Tactical
STAR GEEK - Counseling and Intelligence
Hebe - Logistics
Communications (Bridge position)
Helm (Bridge Position)
Lounge Manager

That's it for now. Welcome Ensign Peck. Please write your journey/arrival to Utopia Planitia. I'll be sending you a JP starter before long.

» Another New Crew Member Coming on Board

Posted on Mon Sep 13th, 2021 @ 7:10pm by Captain Grayson Ba'Chu in Sim Announcement

More good news to share. We have added another crew member to the manifest:

Chief Security Officer - Lieutenant T'Rin (Sable in Discord)

That brings us to a crew of six and, while it would be great to fill those last spots, I'm thinking we can start preparing for departure.

Most Urgent:

Chief Tactical
Chief Science Officer

But also really welcome --

Chief Flight Control Officer

Chief Ship Services

Welcome T'Rin.

» Manifest Update

Posted on Sun Sep 12th, 2021 @ 8:08pm by Captain Grayson Ba'Chu in Sim Announcement

Have made some adjustments to the manifest including changes to the department structure and positions within the departments. For example:

- Communications and Intelligence have been combined into one department now called SIGNIT. Note that Intelligence is NOT part of Starfleet Intelligence. There is a Chief that runs the department with two Assistant Chiefs, one for Intel and one for Communications.
- Operations now has three Assistant Chief spots -- one for Sensors, one for Resource Management and one for Strategic Operations. Oh yeah - Strategic Operations has been folded into the Operations department.
- Medical and Counselor has been separated into different departments.
- Civilian Affairs is now called Ship Services with Starfleet positions for morale, chef, lounge manager and also civilian position for Reporter.
- Diplomacy includes a chaplain and a culinary specialist as well as Media Relations
- Security and Tactical are separate departments. Security includes an SCIS officer (Starfleet Criminal Intelligence Services).
- Tried to create a senior enlisted position for every department though one or two could use better names, I'm sure.

I think that's everything. Anyways, take a look around. Gives you lots of options for NPCs and hopefully, interesting choices for new players as well because, yes, we're still recruiting.

Enjoy,
